Advocacy

The Voice of the Real Estate Community

BOMA has long been an advocate for the Real Estate Industry representing the Real Estate Industry’s interests in both the legislative and code development processes, and a membership in BOMA is an investment in the advocacy work that BOMA provides to Building Owners and the Real Estate Industry.

Did you know that BOMA International employs an Advocacy Staff consisting of (6) six fulltime staff members who work hard getting acquainted with and educating members of the United States Congress, helping them to understand the issues that affect Building Owners and the Real Estate Industry. When bills are presented to Congress that are well intended, but that are a political knee jerk reaction to a public issue(s), BOMA’s Advocacy Staff is there to be sure that hastily crafted bills are tempered with a measure of common sense so that final bills will not be too burdensome on building owners.  Also, if there an issue that need to be addressed, the Advocacy Staff will promote (and sometimes even help craft) legislation to help address the issue.  Some examples are the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act and attempts at reducing Leasehold Depreciation from 39 to 5, 10 or 15 years.   The same BOMA International Advocacy Staff also works to influence ICC code development for issues like energy conservation, indoor air quality, elevator safety, and other health and life safety issues, so that new codes will be developed in a manner that is not unduly burdensome to building owners.

Locally, BOMA Oklahoma City keeps its members informed of local issues affecting the real estate industry and when state or local legislation is irrational, unnecessarily burdensome or when it seeks to impose unwarranted authority over property owners, BOMA-OKC participates in grass roots efforts representing the interests of the Real Estate Industry, Building Owners and its members.

The bottom line with Advocacy is that BOMA is working hard for Building Owners and the Real Estate Industry, and a membership in BOMA is an investment in the Real Estate Industry.
